I'm not sure why we find vampires so intriguing. In literature they return to the 1720s in the pre-Austro-Hungarian Empire. But their real popularity and impact featured the publication of Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1899. Composed in Victorian England during the time of much disease from tuberculosis and syphilis, is it no wonder that this book focused on death, sex and blood? These qualities continue in a lot more contemporary vampire tales by Charlaine Harris and others.
I'm perplexed with adults who oppose fantasy. Thomas Edison was chastised for being a dreamer and ended up being one of our greatest inventors. Thinking outside package is an advantage in this fast moving world, and fantasy is certainly an outside-the-box activity. It will take a dreadful great deal of creativity to fix some of the problems facing us today.
Nick: This is the type of question that might lead to a book-length response. Kids are extremely creative and I think as we become adults we forget how big a part creativity played in our own lives. Working on the book took me back to my youth, where we constructed forts in my yard and dreamed about flying. I think kids use fantasy to secure themselves from the risks of the real life and to keep themselves from growing up too quickly.
I'll confess, when I first started checking out the unique, it took me about 30-40 pages before I was hooked. Those very first 30-40 pages took me a few weeks and a number of times of sitting down before I made it through them. I didn't discover myself engaged until after those very first pages. As soon as there, I couldn't put the book down. Now, my attention period is brief, so don't blame the book, but offer credit where due: the rest of the book is so appealing that even my brief attention span wasn't a problem.

The series started with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We are introduced to middle schooler Greg Huffley, who sets the tone for the whole series right away by insisting that this is a journal, not a diary. But when Mama purchased it for him, she got one that stated "journal" on it, despite the fact that he specifically told her not to. Great.
